Itinerary Day by Day
Day 1: Cusco – Santa Maria (Biking) (L, D)
We pick you up from your hotel around 7:30 a.m. and travel by bus to Abra Malaga Pass where we are going to start our biking tour to Santa Maria. On the rapid downhill ride we’ll enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the mountains and the cloud forest, typical for this region. Our biking will last about five hours until reaching Santa Maria. If you still have energy and are looking for more action, an exciting River Rafting adventure is waiting for you (optional). We spend the night in a basic hostel in Santa Maria.
Day 2: Santa Maria – Santa Teresa (B, L, D)
We start trekking early in the morning after a nice breakfast. The duration of the hike will be about seven to eight hours. During our ascents and descents we will pass small traditional villages, observe a variety of vegetation and even walk on an ancient and perfectly preserved Inca trail. Parrots, monkeys and different birds are among the animals that can be observed in the area. We will visit the hot springs close to Santa Teresa where you can enjoy a relaxing bath after the long hike. From the hot springs it’s another 45 minutes’ walk to Santa Teresa, the village where we spend the night.
Day 3: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes (B, L, D)
We awake early and continue our trek towards Machu Picchu. We walk for about two hours, observing plantations of fruits such as banana, mango, orange and avocado along the way until reaching the Hydroelectric Power Station where we’ll have lunch. With the mountain Machu Picchu in sight, we walk for 2 more hours along the railway and finally arrive in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town). You spend the night in a hostel with hot showers and enjoy a last dinner with the group.
Day 4: Visit Machu Picchu and return to Cusco (B)
Morning begins very early, around 4.00am. The plan is to experience a beautiful sunrise at the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. To get there, you can either walk for about 1.5 hours or take the first bus that leaves at 5:30 and takes about 25 minutes. Arriving we will see the magnificent citadel quietly being filled with the light of the day. After a short rest, a walking tour is given by your guide, showing you the most important sights of the archaeological complex. After the tour you will have time to explore the mysterious city by yourself. Optional you climb the peak of Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (prior booking!). Later in the afternoon you take the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and return to Cusco by bus (come back to Hidroelectrica to take the bus, you must arrive there maximum 14:30 ) where we’ll arrive at night.
